The Gauteng Carnival runs this Saturday (June 5) in Soweto with this year's focus being on the African qualifying countries for the 2010 World Cup, as well as Brazil and South Africa's North West, KwaZulu Natal and Cape Town areas. The Carnival will take the form of a huge moving street party.
The Giant Match, staging 32 giant puppets, each measuring up to four metres tall will also be featured. The puppet show is a South African take on Romeo and Juliet, telling the story of two young lovers kept apart by the feud between their two families.
Five communities from Gauteng (Orange Farm, Kliptown, Sedibeng, West Rand and Metsweding) have teamed up to create the 32 giant puppets, masks and other theatre objects. Seventeen artists from France, Italy and Burkina Faso and about 100 South African artists and professionals have been unleashing their creativity on this project.
The Giant Match kicks off at at the Carnival then moves around Gauteng's Public Viewing Areas and Fan Parks at the start of the World Cup.
