Oceans Without Borders has shared a video, taken by Chris Barfoot Photography, showing some of the 105 sea turtle hatchlings that were witnessed on Mnemba Island, Zanzibar. The video was shared on May 23, World Turtle Day.
The organisation noted in the post that the video had been taken the day before, and that they had seen a 100% hatching success, which is the proportion of eggs from which hatchlings emerge.
Only one in a 1 000 turtles normally make it to adulthood. And, six of the seven species of sea turtle are classified as threatened or endangered.
The island celebrates 21 years of its turtle monitoring programme this year, one of the longest continuously running turtle nest monitoring programmes in the western Indian Ocean.
