Tourism and trade marketing body, Wesgro, is inviting businesses to apply for the funding of virtual events going live online from April 1 to September 30 this year.

“Globally, we find ourselves in an unprecedented climate, with the COVID-19 pandemic forcing us to adapt the way we operate. The events space, in particular, needs to take this into account, with current regulations set by government limiting the numbers allowed for events,” said Linda Mase, Business Development Manager for Incentives and Exhibitions at Wesgro.

She says Wesgro is looking for hosts who want to take their events online. “Our events team is looking for events that will virtually showcase and profile the destination, while allowing for the audience, and potential travellers, to experience the very best of what Cape Town and the Western Cape has to offer.”

Mase defines a virtual event as “any organised interactive gathering that happens on the Internet rather than in a physical location”.

Applications for funding close on April 20, and guidelines for applications include the following:

  • The event must be hosted on a suitable online platform.
  • It must be confirmed whether the event experience will be live streamed or pre-recorded.
  • Have a defined target audience and promotional strategy.
  • A minimum number of 100 virtual attendees.
