Installation of security cameras along Vilakazi Street to help keep businesses safe and operational have been proposed by Herman Mashaba, Executive Mayor of Johannesburg. Mashaba visited Sakhumzi restaurant on Monday, following the death of the manager during an attempted robbery.
“We need to secure Vilakazi Street and other economic hubs in the city so we can reach our 5% economic growth target and reduce unemployment,” tweeted Mashaba.
Archie Tsoka, Marketing Manager of Sakhumzi, appealed to government earlier this week to make the security of Vilakazi Street a top priority.
Mashaba added that discussions needed to take place with the Department of Tourism to protect Vilakazi Street and what it stands for. “We must make sure residents and tourists feel safe.”
Discussions with the Provincial Commissioner and Mashaba are also expected to take place to ensure that the “best people” are deployed to investigate the murder of the manager of Sakhumzi.
