Namibian citizens are being encouraged to travel domestically to enjoy the annual display of wildflowers in the Namib Desert this year, filling the void left by the absence of international tourists due to COVID-19. The desert burst into bloom in June following good rains and the flowers are expected to last until the middle of this month.
The event is always popular with photographers, who make the trip from neighbouring countries and further afield to photograph the desert in bloom, but are unable to do so this year as Namibia’s borders remain closed due to the virus.
Klein-Aus Vista, a collection of lodges in Gondwana Sperrgebiet Rand Park between Aus and Lüderitz, is offering guided trips to view the flowers in the park for day visitors and overnight guests. Namibian citizens receive a special discount on the trips as well as a 60% discount on accommodation.
The lodge shared on its Facebook page that guests had enjoyed last weekend’s flower tours, adding that a possibility of more rain could extend the duration of the flowering season.
