In response to a story highlighting that tourism recovery in South Africa needs to be inclusive of development in rural areas, readers are sceptical of it taking off, with many pointing out that, with all the barriers to international tourism, this is a mere pipedream.
We particularly enjoyed owner of the Cape Town-based Tour du Cap, Francoise Armour’s take on it:
“This article is like satire but I know it's not meant to be.
Reminds me of the tourism office just off the N7 in the Northern Cape. A very large brand-new building, full of furniture including an expensive coffee machine, racks for brochures, desks for information agents, toilets for the public, etc etc – all the basics for a functioning info centre. Problem is, every time I went there it was closed and dusty and totally empty.”
