This week’s top comment concerns the story detailing a labour union’s impact on Comair’s operations.
Colin J Fryer shared his thoughts on what southern Africa needs from an airline:
“Southern Africa needs a reliable, sustainable and well run/managed regional airline. We need to be able to offer hub and spoke facilities to the inbound international airlines to provide both local and regional airlift to the many primary and secondary destinations within southern Africa for their international pax. Comair (BA franchise) and kulula, its LCC, have done just this successfully for yonks until not so much the advent of COVID-19, but through a number of adverse developments derailing its business plan. It would be in the interests of those employees who will remain under this aegis going forward, the entire airlift programme across southern Africa and the future of tourism flows, if this business rescue plan is put in place with full cognisance of the reality on the ground within this moment. Recognition of the reality of this moment requires cognisant acceptance of the need to provide a high-quality airlift within southern Africa and the need to be sustainable, flexible and dynamic.”
