South African Tourism (SA Tourism) celebrated the centenary of Nelson Mandela’s birth in London last week. The event, A Taste of Madiba – Celebrating Nelson Mandela, was attended by Christo Brand, Mandela’s former prison guard, and Xoliswa Ndoyiya, Mandela’s personal chef of 20 years.
On June 12, SA Tourism, in collaboration with Brand South Africa, SAA and Red Carnation Hotels, hosted a dinner at bbar, The Rubens at the Palace in London Victoria for guests and media. Brand and Ndoyiya were joined by Anna Trapido, chef and author. The trio shared stories of their time with Madiba. The meal consisted of three courses, based on Mandela’s favourite foods and curated by Ndoyiya.
On June 13, a reception was held at the South African High Commission. Once again, guests were treated to a culinary journey inspired by Mandela’s favourite dishes, created by Trapido and Ndoyiya. A panel discussion was held where attendees listened to anecdotes about Mandela’s love for South African cuisine. SA Tourism and the Nelson Mandela Foundation also unveiled some of the centenary celebrations planned for 2018.
