Malawi Airlines to take to skies by end of January

Malawi Airlines Ltd has recently obtained its Air Operator Certificate (AOC), allowing it to operate flights to and from Malawi, confirmed a spokesperson for the Malawi Tourist Office in Johannesburg. The airline is expected take to the skies for its inaugural flight on January 29.

In a statement, Malawi Airlines’ CEO, Kassim Geresu, said he was hoping to re-instate all the destinations Air Malawi used to serve, including the route to Johannesburg.

Last year, the Malawi government placed the struggling Air Malawi under liquidation. Ethiopian Airlines was selected as a strategic partner to re-capitalise the ailing airline and rebranded it as Malawi Airlines. Malawi Airlines is a public-private partnership between the Government of Malawi, Ethiopian Airlines and Malawian investors. Ethiopian Airlines holds a 49% share in the new airline.
