One of the problems with greening the office environment is that because being a bit greener is everyone’s responsibility, it soon becomes no one’s. Unless you work for a big industrial where the presence of an environmental or health officer is mandatory, it’s unlikely that there is someone in your workspace who has the time and energy to deal with making your work environment a happier, healthier and greener place to be.
Find a few like-minded souls and get a green committee together. Even if all you do is share useful tips and websites with your colleagues, you will be making a small difference. Other easy initiatives that will help your department’s bottom line are paper budgeting and recycling, ‘think before you print’ campaigns, and campaigns to slim down the business’ use of water, electricity and raw materials.
This is also an excellent forum to campaign for worker happiness initiatives such as telecommuting, working mother issues and 4.5-day weeks. And even if all you’re doing is having a monthly tea where you get to show off your organic baking skills, you are still doing your bit.
