Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Tourism, Najib Balala, has been elected to chair the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Executive Council for 2019-2020.

The elections took place during the UNWTO General Assembly in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on September 13.

During his one-year tenure as the chair to the UNWTO, Balala said he intends pushing for the development of a Tourism Commission in the African Union (AU).

He added that while the AU had many commissions – including commissions of infrastructure, peace and security, among others – it had none for tourism, which employs millions of people in the region.
