Nkwichi Lodge, on the banks of Lake Malawi in northern Mozambique, has created a Star Bed concept, which allows guests to literally sleep under the stars.

A four-poster bed dressed in luxurious linen, and draped in an elegant mosquito net, is placed in one of three locations: on a rocky outcrop (surrounded by water), a deserted beach (surrounded by baobab trees), or on elevated viewpoint with sunset views and morning vistas over the lake. The location will be determined by the elements.

The locations are just far enough from the main lodge to give guests the feeling of privacy in the open space, while enjoying the evening sounds of nature with a loved one. Dinner is served either at the location or before guests leave for the location.

Lauren Slater, Reservations Manager of Nkwichi Lodge, says that the Star Bed isn’t necessarily for romantic couples only. “I would say the Star Bed is for anybody who has a yearning to sleep under an open sky, far from any lights and noise and human interference. Honeymooners and couples will love it for its incredibly romantic setting; and families will find they have so much more to talk about than they thought they did, while sitting next to a fire, seeing who can spot the first shooting star.”

Anantara Medjumbe, located on a tiny island in the Quirimbas Archipelago, is another location that offers the Star Bed experience – the difference being that one is left alone on a completely different, nearby island.

Guests may be concerned about security, with the Star Bed being so isolated, but Medjumbe says that “the island is a maximum of 2km away from the main island, and as such it is a quick boat trip to reach the guests should they require any assistance. Guests can communicate freely with our team over a two-way radio. We also have a security guard located on Quisanga Island 24/7”.

“Mozambique is fast becoming one of the most popular honeymoon destinations, mainly due to the vast diversity of activities that are mainly included in the normal rates”, says Kim Rossi of The Mozambique Collection. “For most travellers to Africa, Mozambique is not always the first choice, but the destination is fast becoming a favourite of those that are seeking something a little bit different, a bit quieter and a little bit more remote.”
