SANParks has announced that it will release contracted accommodation blocked off for the FIFA World Cup 2010 back into available inventory.

The three camps in the Kruger National Park that were closest to the airport and the national road had, until now, been fully allocated to MATCH. These were Skukuza, Pretoriuskop and Berg-en-Dal.

To reduce speculative bookings, SANParks will want a 50% deposit within 10 days of a booking for a larger group, GM Sales and Marketing, Bheki Zwane, told Tourism Update Online.

SANParks had allocated a third of its inventory to MATCH.

The new inventory will be reflected on the SANPark’s site, www.sanparks.co.za, from Thursday, March 4.

Firstly - The Kruger robs small operators of conducting business at their normal camps (by closing the inventory) Then - with 99 days to go - releases it because MATCH didn't live up to the promises! It simply shows the vast differences in tourism hospitality standards provided by SaNPARKS Vs professional operators. Follows on from the 30 day notice that check in times have changed without a thought to the many international visitors to the Kruger (on professional tourism itineraries) with professional operators that have prebooked international flights to allow time for vistors to freshen up before their afternoon game drives. So - Kruger was hoodwinked by MATCH at the expense of the operators that have provided so much branding and professional services in the Kruger. Shame on this irresponsible management! Perhaps Kruger management should realise they don't hold all the cards - and the amount of damage they cause to the local professional tourism and hospitality sector may begin to erode the goowill provided. It seems that Kruger hospitality lost interest in protecting animals for awhile - got lured by the smell of money but in the end - Met their MATCH!

Sure, established tourism patterns are disrupted because of the fact we are hosting the biggest event in the world. It does create problems. But would we have won the bid if we told FIFA we would not deal with MATCH?

I cannot see how you can possibly link winning the bid for the world cup and contracting with MATCH. You've missed the boat completely. There is one lesson you need to learn in this industry and that is ALWAYS look after the operators.

Shocking

I fully agree with Anonymous, I work for a provincial authority and found Match definitely did not live up to their promises. Almost all of the accommodation in my area that contracted with Match is still completely empty.

I am a small one-man operator and was completely shut out of Kruger Park and could not offer Pax a tour there. Now because they have been let down by empty promises they come running back to the regulars. Not all Pax like to travel on a full bus but prefer the more personal touch of the smaller operator and we probably fill as much accommodation collectively as the busload operators do.
