Cape Point funicular closes for upgrade

The popular Flying Dutchman funicular at Cape Point is to be replaced by a comfortable, more modern and more efficient funicular during the first quarter of this year.

The current funicular – the only commercial operation of its kind in Africa – has been ferrying tourists up a steep incline from the bottom station to the old lighthouse for the past 13 years.

Although the funicular service will be suspended for three months, tourists will not be inconvenienced, thanks to a temporary bus service that has been put in place.

The existing funicular will cease operation on January 18. A new, improved Flying Dutchman will put the “fun” back into “fun-icular” when it reopens for business on April 24, well ahead of an expected influx of tourists arriving in Cape Town for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

On Monday 28 December hundreds of tourists were angered by the funicular refusing to sell tickets after 16h45. The tourist attraction was so busy, people had to be shuttled from the first car park a couple of km short of the actual point. As a result many tourists were deprived of the opportunity to go up to the point. And to add salt to their wounds the restaurant was also closed before 17h00. Sadly the attitude of most contractors at Cape Point leaves a lot to be desired!

Good timing ?

No service from Monday 18.01.2010 ? Mmmn, according to our historical flow of both domestic and international clients to Cape Point, this is just outside of peak flow and right within high flow dates. Would there be an alternative to take clients to the upper level station ? Could this upgrade have been scheduled for a better time ? Should the entrance fee be reducted because many visitors will be unable to climb to the view point ? Colin J. FRYER. Centre Stage Travel.
